There’s a book at every stage of every person’s life. This I realized in tears after reading Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson, MD.
What’s in Who Moved My Cheese? It is a practical guide to overcoming fear of change; a catalyst to moving out from the comfort zone; and a springboard to embracing a fulfilling life. This parable, self-help, psychology and personal development book shows (1) a class reunion, where former classmates speak of how it used to be; (2) the story of Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw, which Michael narrated; and (3) the discussion of the story.
Why read this book? Who Moved My Cheese shows the reader in an easy read manner what makes him happy; how does he define success; how he becomes attached to either or both; how he reacts when he loses his grip of his happiness and/or success; and how to begin again. Most importantly, this book helps to rewire the mind; encourages the heart to be more forgiving of oneself; and teaches courage how to let go and move on.
How to begin (again) from scratch? This reality can be cathartic. And when there’s catharsis it’s when the person finds himself in crisis. I personally wished I was able to read Who Moved My Cheese right after its publication; so it saved me time overthinking or guided the course of things. Likewise, so I was able to see an incoming change or its first manifestation; so I handled things differently. But maybe, I found this book just in time before I lose myself again in the maze of my thoughts.
Mr. Johnson writes in a manner where readers can greatly identify himself to the role playing of characters. Are you Sniff, Scurry, Hem or Haw? It’s really interesting to know. He has his way of making change appear doable. So, who the reader was before reading his Who Moved My Cheese, he’d simply be thankful he understood his lessons this time.
In the end, the reader finds serenity, forgiveness of oneself and the situation, peace as s/he moves forward, and courage to live life one more time.
